New year, new font, new outlook, What more could you want???

For as long as I can recall a word often times used to describe my personality is "animated". At first I looked at the person saying thinking: "WTF?" But I can see now what they mean. Even Marie would tell you that I'm good for a laugh, even long time super friend of TBF, Harlean Carpenter gave her two cents about me and said she could never imagine herself ever being bored around me. People, I don't know about you... but that sounds like love to me.

So since I'm an animated guy, I decided to embrace my animated part for this week and come up with something very special, something equally animated and also very, very metal to start off 2008 here @ Brian's_Song. So without further ado, allow me to present one of the most brutal, metal, brutally metal bands out today..

Well here we are, the end of 2007, I can't stop thinking about all the fun we've had and can't wait for all the fun we're gonna have when we return in January. So how do we do this this week? Slayer? Prodigy? Paul Van Dyk? Cannibal Corpse? Actually as I look back on why I started doing Brian's Song, I remember the very first song I spotlighted: Tool's "Parabola". Man all those videos we've shown and we never gave appropriate props to the band that inspired this segment... That's just wrong!!


Don't worry, don't worry as usual I will make things right and give the closing spotlight of 2007 to the band that started it all.

So to finish up 2007 I wanted to pick something really special and I admit that I had a hard time trying to pick a video. Usually when we pick a video, we really aim for the music and on occasion the videos are their perfect counterpart and sometimes a video overshadows a song and you forget why you're watching that video in the first place.

So the question this week: Do I aim for a video that acts as a song's visual counterpart or do I pick a video that is just so outrageous that you forget why you're even watching it in the first place?

Hope everyone had a great Halloween, I made out like a bandit, granted I attacked most of the children for their candy...but you see.. well... they don't need that much sugar in their system anyway.. But I should apologize to Marie for stealing her candy (and tackling her for it), in my defense I should note that she didn't need that much sugar in her system either, anyway... I'm Sorry..

Brian's Song - Halloween Edition

Welcome Boils and Ghouls to Brian's Spooktactular Horrific Halloween Brian's Song.... Boo Bitch!!!

This is my Holiday, most people claim Christmas, Thanksgiving or Valentine's Day, oh no not me, this is my time baby!!! I haven't been this excited since Sears had that sale on button up shirts. (Granted I already own 20 but Marie would agree with me when I say "Damn it, I look good in them"...that and with my body type I now know that God apparently does not want me to shop at the Gap (Amen).)

So by now that parties are in full swing left and right, the booze, the scantly clad women, monster movie marathons, what more could you want? Hell give me a pizza, a six pack of root beer and a "Hellraiser" marathon and I'm in heaven.

So I can already tell that the party soundtracks will range from decent to "God help me now!!!" but above all else one artist is sure to get some extra time in the spotlight this week: Rob Zombie

We here at TBF have nothing but love for Rob Zombie for all his works both in music and film, whether he was banging heads with White Zombie or on his own or making us damn near freak out to his movies, the man brings his "A game". So I reviewed his entire videography and I couldn't decide what to post.... then I thought why have one when we SO need two to get our necessary head banging dose.

I really like this new format. It's looking good, it sounds good, overall you can't complain. It's a definite improvement over last year.

We love em, we live em and for some of us, they'll even make out to it. (not me, I have papers to work on, a column doesn't make itself people!)

Brian's Song - Come to Daddy

Here we go. Week two into the new season, and how can I top Lemmy? Seriously?

I mean I grew up in a household where rock is law and thus Lemmy is God.

Oh wait never mind, I figured it out. So here we go...

In the past, anytime I wrote up a song to be spotlighted, I'd usually go for songs that had great lyrical depth. Songs that would normally fit well on a writing blog: Something Poetic or a description of an experience from life.

So now that we're showcasing videos I'd like to focus on different types of music. Whether it's hearing the song that can move you and/or something equally if not more visually impactful. I want to in general step up our game here. After looking through my video collection I found the perfect video to best expressive this belief.

I've admitted before to being a huge Aphex Twin fan. Many a time I'd be listening to "Drukqs", "I Care Because You Do", "Richard D. James Album" and especially his EP's "Windowlicker" and of course "Come To Daddy." My main love for it stems from the fact that I think it's beautiful.

I mean realistically the music can be described as random, chaotic, repetitive, sometimes abrasive (Ventolin), and at times has created a vibe of surrealism to my job or whatever I'm doing at the time and ironically I can't recall a time while listening
to him that I haven't felt more at peace, weird.

I'd like to think it was something simple like I see beauty in random and chaotic things. That or I'm batshit crazy... can't really tell.

Brian's Song - "Shake Your Blood"

Well, after some well deserved time off, we're back for another season of kick-ass tunes and this time around we're playing a whole new game. We're utilizing our ability to play videos so that way we can not only allow you to think but now you can bang your head as well.

So the grand debate was how do I start this season off? I mean I knew I wanted something to really get people moving but with a world full of music, you'd imagine that my options were a bit on the many side.

So naturally at this point I would turn to Marie for guidance but she threw out Placebo. So I naturally went the opposite direction and went into my rock collection. It was there that the words of my uncle came to me and I remembered one of the main rules of Rock n Roll:

"Lemmy is God"

So, newly invigorated I sought out the man who could usher in a new season properly: Lemmy Kilminster.

Anyone could easily pick out a Motšrhead song but I went a different route and chose a song from a couple years ago where Lemmy teamed up with Foo Fighters lead singer Dave Grohl on the project "Probot".

Also side note: We're not taking any sides in the upcoming war between Oprah and Rachel Ray. If they want to fight each for the right to claim World Domination, that's their thing. Our job is just to sell them guns. Sorry if that adds some confusion, but I just wanted to clear the air.

Oh, and we're starting a new area this year: Opium

Yup, turns out that people are just nuts about it, they can't stop talking about it, so let's put some focus on that this year.

Thirdly:

After enough time away I've finally got the schedule just how I like it... So with out further ado.. here's how it going to go:

Some might think that Brian's cage has been sufficiently rattled lately by the whole Feminism Factor Fiasco. (ah, alliteration, always an amusing addition...) But I propose to rattle it even further, shake the poor boy from the very foundation on which he stands, by introducing to his blog a genre almost guaranteed to make his hair stand on end. Yes, I'm going there. I'm doing that. I'm talking about... COUNTRY MUSIC!

To me, the beauty of country music is that is celebrates every aspect of the human condition. It's not all about getting drunk and your woman leaving and the train being late and your dog running away. Yes, those things are sung about, but they're only a very small part of the glorious world of country music. Falling in love, staying in love, having babies, watching your babies get married, watching your grandbabies get married, losing your job, being happy about losing your job, realizing the person you thought you loved as a teenager is really a complete jerk, the day to day and the once in a lifetime and everything in between are what country music is all about. It is also, at times, funnier than hell.

Eloy's Song

This week is a very special "Brian's Song" because I'm dedicating this week's song to my Uncle Eloy. Early Tuesday morning I was informed that my Uncle had to have heart surgery on Wednesday. I know there's a million details to it but it is a family matter and thus I won't go into detail.

Growing up my father wasn't around and I did have enough people to step in as surrogates but my uncle was different. he didn't act like a father but more like an older brother. we'd horse around and believe it or not he's the one to blame for my taste in music today. When I was four years old he slapped some headphones on me and busted out some Metallica,
Motorhead, GNR, Motley Crue, and of course Judas Priest and I've been hooked ever since and honestly... I really liked that.

My half-brothers never really wanted anything to do with me and he stepped up when he was still just a punk no older than I am now and he was there. I have faith in a lot of things and I have faith that he'll make through this.. besides my family is a stubborn bunch, "too stubborn to live, too stubborn to die"... it kinda became the family motto.

So tonight, all jokes aside, we here at The Brian Factor kick it old school just for you Eloy...So tonight I'm dedicating this for you man.. I love you and I know you're gonna be fine, man!!

Brian's Song: Land of Confusion

The only thing I have to say is simply this: Ouch! :(

Now moving on...

I have only one rule when it come to bands doing cover songs: IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO A COVER SONG, PLEASE DO IT WELL.

When I first heard that Disturbed was doing a cover of Genesis' "Land Of Confusion" I was at first a little nervous, but after hearing it, I realized there was nothing worry about. I think they did a great job with the song, it sounds just like the original except that they gave it that rockin sound that sounds oh so good to my ears.

Naturally Marie hates it, but it's not so much the band she hates as much the me blaring the song on my stereo and the eventual knocks on my walls from angry neighbors.

So for this week I spotlight "Land Of Confusion" by Disturbed as this week's Brian's Song.

Marie's Song(s): Battle Music

Today you are all lucky boys and girls. I've got three songs for you! Looking through my playlists, I happened upon one of my favorites: Villainy. (And I just realized now that the three songs I chose are all from film or tv show soundtracks, which fits in with this week's theme.)

The first song is the fourth track from one of my favorite martial arts films Duelist (Hyeongsa in its original language). The song is called "병판의 생일잔치" and I have no idea how it's pronounced. An online translator translated the song's title as "Birthday party of bottle petal," but we know how unreliable those things are. It's probably my favorite song from the soundtrack, though the rest of it is pretty kick-ass too.

Second is "Prelude to War," from the Battlestar Galactica season one soundtrack. I've never seen the show, but when I heard another song by the composer, I checked out the soundtrack. This piece is traditionally military, with an emphasis on drums. Then the string instruments kick in, and the awesomeness value increases ten-fold. If you've ever seen "The Fog of War," parts of this song really remind of the music from that film.

The last one is "To Victory" from the fantastic movie 300. Again, lots of drums, but this one also has some vocals. No lyrics I can understand, though, so it's still cool rather than corny.

These are three songs that I crank up the volume to on my πPod to get in the mood to kick ass. (Not literally, but perhaps one of these days some soldier of fortune will get in my face on my way to the dining hall, and I'll leave him in a steaming and twitching heap. :)

Well I know that this week is suppose to be all about Marie, but she's feeling a little under the weather this week, she still plans to present "The Marie Factor" but she just didn't have the strenght to put a song together, so I came in as a shining knight in Black Armor... To save the day!!!

I wanted to pick out a great song but one that also could help me to best describe Marie... Unfortunately I already used "Closer" so I think this will do just fine...
